Pittsburgh's 10-Game Winning Streak Ends

PITTSBURGH, August 30 (AP) -- Eppa Rixey fired a complete game four-hitter as the Cincinnati Reds brought Pittsburgh's 10-game winning streak to a close before 19,565 at Forbes Field in a contest that took only 90 minutes to complete.

Rixey (12-9) helped the Reds finally overcome their frustration in this series; the Pirates had won the previous two games by a run apiece, including a 15-inning affair yesterday.  The Reds right-hander outdueled Pittsburgh starter Wilbur Cooper (19-12) who was foiled in his attempt to win his 20th game of the season.

The Reds took a lead they would never relinquish in the top of the second.  Babe Pinnelli led off with a single and was chased home by Sammy Bohne's double to the left-center field wall.  Bubbles Hargave that laced a double of his own down the left field line and Cincinnati led 2-0.  Cooper retired the next three batters in order to avoid further damage and the Pirates bounced right back in their half of the frame to narrow the gap.  Glen Wright tripled over the head of center fielder Edd Rousch and Pie Traynor's double cut the Reds' lead to 2-1, but Rixey stiffened and retired the next three Pirates without incident.

That was just about the end of the Pittsburgh scoring chances.  Rixey retired 23 of the final 26 batters he faced, after the Traynor double.  The Pirates never had two baserunners at the same time and only had one man reach second base after Pittsburgh's third baseman hit his run-scoring two-bagger with no one out in the second inning.

The Reds picked up an insurance run in the fifth.  Jake Daubert singled with one out and stole second.  Rousch then singled to left, scoring Daubert.  Rousch himself was thrown out trying to advance to second on the play, but the damage was done.

The loss by the Pirates keeps them in a first place National League tie with the New York Giants, who fell earlier in the day to Brooklyn.  Pittsburgh and New York both have 31 contests remaining including a three-game series with one another at the Polo Grounds September 23-25.
