PENNOCK STIFLES BOSOX
Ruth's 40th Stretches Streak to 26

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (AP) - Herb Pennock fired a complete game five-hit shutout and three Yankees homered in New York's 7-0 win over the Boston Red Sox in the first game of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium.  For the hard luck Pennock (12-16) it was his first shutout of the season.

The Yankees left-hander retired the first nine Red Sox before surrendering Ira Flagstead's leadoff double into the left field corner in the fourth.  Boston stranded Flagstead, the team's only baserunner to reach second base.

Babe Ruth provided the Yankees with the only run they would need in the first inning with a two-out solo home run into the right field bleachers.  The homer--Ruth's major league best 40th of the year--extended his hitting streak to 26 games, the second longest in all of baseball this season (teammate Whitey Witt had a 27-game streak earlier).

New York acquired some breathing room in the second when Bob Meusel led off with a base on balls courtesy of Boston starter Curt Fullerton (5-8) and promptly stole second.  Aaron Ward tripled him home to make it 2-0 and the Yankees' lead was extended to three runs on Everett Scott's RBI-grounder.

The score remained 3-0 until the seventh when Witt popped his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot run just inside the right field foul pole, in the seventh.  Scott capped the scoring with a two-run homer of his own in the bottom of the eighth.

As disappointing a season as it has been for the Yankees, the club can move into a tie for third place with the Red Sox by beating Boston in the nightcap.
