RED HOT BUCS VICTORIOUS AGAIN
Cooper Blanks Card for 20th Win

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 3 (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates used an eight-run third inning to run roughshod over the St. Louis Cardinals for a 9-0 victory at Forbes Field.  It was the fourth straight victory--and 14th in the last 15 games--for the Pirates.  The Cardinals have dropped seven straight and ten of their last 11.

Wilbur Cooper fired his second shutout of the season en route to his 20th victory of the year.  Cooper limited St. Louis to six hits and has now beaten the Cardinals four times in five starts.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Pittsburgh buried St. Louis starter Hi Bell under an avalanche of hits.  Cooper led off the inning with a looping single to center and Eddie Moore followed with a triple to the left-center field wall, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.  Max Carey singled through the box to make it 2-0 and Kiki Cuyler's double to left-center plated Carey with the third run of the frame.  Bell then stiffened, fanning both Glenn Wright and Pie Traynor but the wheels came off for the Cardinals.  Rabbit Maranville's foul pop to the left side of the diamond was dropped by third baseman Hi Myers for an error.  Instead of the inning ending, Maranville used his new life to rope a single over shortstop Spec Toporcer's head, driving in Cuyler with the fourth run of the inning.  The Rabbit stole second and promptly scored when Charlie Grimm followed with a triple to right.  Cooper smacked his second single of the inning and when Moore followed with a single of his own the score was 7-0 and Bell's day was over.  New pitcher Bob Vines, making his season's debut, immediately walked Carey to fill the bases and yielded an RBI-infield hit to Cuyler before finally ending the inning on Wright's fly ball to center.  14 batters had come to the plate and eight of them had scored.  11 reached base safely.

It was far more support than Cooper would need on this afternoon.  The best scoring opportunity for St. Louis came in the second when Myers and Mike Gonzalez singled to open the inning and Ed Clough sacrificed both runners into scoring position with one out.  But Bell chopped a ball to Traynor at third who cut down Myers at the plate and, after Jack Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Toporcer rolled weakly to Grimm at first to end the threat.  It was the only time the Cardinals advanced a runner past second base all afternoon.

Pittsburgh gained an unneeded insurance run in the sixth inning without the benefit of a hit.  Cuyler reached on the last of Myers' three miscues--a two-base throwing error--to lead off the inning.  He advanced to third on Wright's grounder to first and scored on Traynor's ground ball to third, accounting for the ninth run.

The win moves the Pirates, at least momentarily, into sole possession of first place, pending the outcome of the New York Giants' contest at Braves Field in Boston, the result of which was unavailable at press time.
