PIRATES, GIANTS KEEP ON WINNING
Bucs Beat Brooks for 7th Straight; Giants Top Cubs

NEW YORK, Sept. 19 (AP) - No one would blame the New York Giants if they were becoming frustrated.  Artie Nehf won his 16th game of the season and George Kelly belted his 23rd home run as the Giants cruised past the Chicago Cubs, 6-2, at the Polo Grounds for their fourth consecutive victory.  The problem was that, across the bridge in Brooklyn, the Pirates crushed the Robins 9-1 at Ebbets Field, thereby maintaining Pittsburgh's 2 1/2 game edge over New York at the top of the National League standings.  It was seventh straight win for the Pirates and the club improved its record to a remarkable 27-4 since August 21.  In that same time frame, the Giants have posted a fine 22-10 record yet have dropped 5 1/2 games in the standings to Pittsburgh.

At the Polo Grounds, in front of nearly 18,000 supportive partisans, the Giants ran out to an early lead over Chicago and never looked back.  Nehf helped his own cause with a two-out two-run second inning single to put his team on top 2-0.  Kelly's two-run blast, well into the second deck in left field, in the third made it 4-0.  The Cubs fought back to make a game of it in the top of the fourth on Bernie Friberg's eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot.  But the Giants extended the game and all but put the game away with a pair of runs in the sixth on Nehf's sacrifice fly and Ross Youngs' RBI-single.  Nehf was lifted after Sparky Adams' leadoff single in the eighth but Rosy Ryan came on to pitch a pair of scoreless frames to close out the game.

Across the East River, the Pirates roughed up Robins starter Rube Erhardt early en route to the easy win.  Max Carey tripled home Eddie Moore and Glenn Wright later singled in Carey to give Pittsburgh a 2-0 first inning lead.  In the third, the Pirates increased their lead to four by scoring one run on Kiki Cuyler's RBI double and another on Wright's grounder.  The Robins got on the board in the bottom of the third on Jack Fournier's RBI single, but the Pirates got that run back in the sixth on pitcher Emil Yde's RBI-single  and then put the game away in the seventh.  Pie Traynor's sacrifice fly made it 6-1 and then, following a two-out error on Brooklyn third baseman Milt Stock, Charlie Grimm's two-out double into the right field corner put Pittsburgh on top 8-1.  The Pirates capped their scoring in the ninth on Yde's sacrifice fly.  The Robins gained some measure of consolation on Fournier's National League leading thirtieth home run of the year, a three-run blast onto Bedford Avenue, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth off a tiring Yde, but it wasn't nearly enough.  Yde retired Eddie Brown on a grounder to end the game and secure his sixteenth win of the season.

Both clubs have single games over the next two days against their current opponents, then enjoy an off day before meeting for a critical three-game series at the Polo Grounds on September 23-25.  The Giants can only hope that Brooklyn can cool off the Pirates before then.  Pittsburgh's magic number currently stands at eight.
