RING, PHILS PINCH GIANTS
N.Y. Musters No Offense in Key Loss

NEW YORK, Sept. 27 (AP) - Jimmy Ring threw a complete game and the Phillies mustered just enough offense to deal a significant blow to the postseason hopes of the New York Giants in a 3-1 win in front of nearly 20,000 disappointed customers at the Polo Grounds.  The loss puts the Giants a full game behind Pittsburgh, pending the outcome of the Pirates home game against the Chicago Cubs, in the chase for the National League flag.  New York has just two games remaining in its season.

The Giants wasted another strong pitching performance by Jack Bentley, who held Philadelphia to one unearned run into the eighth inning.

New York actually took the lead in the first.  Freddie Lindstrom led off with a triple and immediately scored on Jimmy O'Connell's single.  That was it for the Giants offense.

The Phillies tied the game in the second inning on an unearned run.  Walter Holke reached on shortstop Travis Jackson's 76th error of the season.  Hod Ford's infield single placed runners on first and second.  Bentley retired Jimmy Wilson on a fly to shallow right and Jimmy Ring fouled to Bill Terry at first but Heinie Sand doubled over Terry's head to score Holke.  Bentley escaped further damage by retiring George Mokan on a fly to center.

The game remained tied at one until the top of the eighth.  With one out, Joe Schultz belted his tenth home run of the year into the lower deck in left.  Frank Parkinson walked and one out later when Ford's double eluded O'Connell in center.  Claude Jonnard replaced Bentley and avoided additional trouble but the Giants never had a single baserunner after Hack Wilson's two-out walk in the seventh.

New York will be desperately rooting for the Cubs to upend the Pirates at Forbes Field this afternoon.
