TROUT 1-HITS BOSOX
Pesky’s Hitting Streak Ends at 22 Games
DETROIT, Aug. 2 (AP) – Dizzy Trout tossed the major league season’s seventh one-hitter, leading the Detroit Tigers past the Boston Red Sox 6-1 at Briggs Stadium. It was the second time in three weeks that a Tigers starter fired a one-hit complete game. Stubby Overmire turned the trick on July 14 in a 3-0 Detroit victory over the New York Yankees in the second game of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. Trout took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but surrendered a double to Wally Moses. Trout walked four batters on the game, but never yielded another safety to Boston.
The Tigers broke a scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fourth. Dick Wakefield drew a one-out walk from Red Sox starter Tex Hughson, and then Roy Cullenbine lined a home run off the upper deck façade in right to give Detroit a 2-0 lead.
Boston got on the scoreboard in the sixth and actually had a good opportunity to tie the game. Hughson led off with a walk and Moses roped a double to right-center, putting runners on second and third with no outs. With the infield back, Johnny Pesky, who would see his MLB season-best hitting streak come to an end at 22 games, grounded to second, scoring Hughson and advancing Moses to third. The tying run was now 90 feet from home plate with only one out. Trout walked Ted Williams intentionally, bringing Rudy York to the plate. On a 1-1 offering, Trout jammed York, forcing a weak pop to second for out number two. Bobby Doerr then flied to center to end the inning and, as it turned out, any real chance for Boston to get back in the game.
The Tigers scored two more runs in the bottom half of the frame. Hank Greenberg reached on an infield hit with one out and moved to second when Wakefield followed with an infield single of his own. Cullenbine then doubled to left-center, scoring Greenberg and chasing Wakefield to third. Skeeter Webb then reached on the third infield hit of the inning, scoring Wakefield. Birdie Tebbetts grounded into an inning-ending double play, but the damage had been done. Detroit now led, 4-1.
The Tigers put the game away with two more runs in the seventh. George Kell’s triple plated Trout, who had singled to lead off the inning, and Hoot Evers’ deep fly to center brought Kell home. It was now 6-1.
Trout had scuffled occasionally with his control, walking four through six innings, but put that behind him as the game moved along. After the intentional walk to Williams, Trout retired the final 11 batters he faced to close out the game.
