BEVENS’ 2ND 1-HITTER OF YEAR LEADS YANKS PAST BOSOX
Ferriss Loses for 1st Time in 10 Decisions
NEW YORK, Aug.9 (AP) – Bill Bevens tossed his second one hitter of the year, allowing only one unearned run in a complete game effort, leading the New York Yankees past the Boston Red Sox 5-1 at Yankee Stadium. Bevens took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but yielded a leadoff single to Ted Williams. It was the only safety the Red Sox managed in the game. Bevens fired a one-hitter on June 20 in New York’s 6-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox in the second game of a doubleheader at Comiskey Park. Boston starter Boo Ferriss absorbed the defeat, his first in the last 10 decisions, dating back to June 18 against the St. Louis Browns at Sportsman’s Park.
The Red Sox briefly took the lead in the top of the second, due entirely to wretched defense on the part of the Yankees. Williams reached leading off when first baseman Tommy Henrich booted his routine grounder. Williams advanced to second on Rudy York’s ground out, bringing Bobby Doerr to the plate. Doerr grounded to short, but Phil Rizzuto’s throw to first ended up in the second row of the grandstand. The two-base error allowed Williams to score, putting Boston on top 1-0.
The Yankees tied the game in the bottom half of the second when Aaron Robinson drew a two-out walk from Ferriss, advanced to second on Johnny Lindell’s base hit and scored when Rizzuto doubled to right. Lindell was thrown out at the plate on the play by Wally Moses, so the inning ended with the game tied at one.
It was still 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth when New York blew the game open. Rizzuto drew a leadoff walk and Bevens’ sacrifice attempt was so good it went for a bunt single, leaving runners on first and second. Snuffy Stirnweiss sacrificed the runners to second and third and Billy Johnson followed with a base hit to left, scoring both runners to put the Yankees on top 3-1. Henrich reached when York booted his grounder, putting runners on first and second and, after Joe DiMaggio flied out, Charlie Keller doubled into the left field corner, scoring both runners to increase the lead to 5-1.
Bevens kept Boston hitless until Williams led off the top of the seventh by grounding a single into right field, but that was the last man to reach as Bevens retired the final nine hitters he faced.
The victory by the Yankees was only the third in 11 head-to-head meetings with the Red Sox to date this season.
