TRIBE IMPROVES TO 17-1 VS. A’S
Reynolds Secures ‘W’ Despite 7 BBs, No Ks
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 22 (AP) – The Cleveland Indians won their 10th consecutive game against the Philadelphia Athletics, 9-3 at Shibe Park. The Indians have now been victorious in 17 of the 18 head-to-head contests between the two clubs this season. It was Cleveland’s seventh straight win overall. The A’s have dropped four in a row. Indians starter Allie Reynolds picked up the win, his eighth of the year in 18 decisions, despite issuing seven walks and striking out none in just 5 1/3 innings of work. Four Cleveland relievers—Joe Krakauskas, Joe Berry and Pete Center—combined for 3-2/3 shutout innings to close out the game.
Philadelphia drew first blood when Elmer Valo led off the bottom of the opening frame with a walk, advanced to third on Oscar Grimes’ base hit, and scored on Barney McCosky’s fly ball.
But the Indians seized firm control of the game in the top of the second when they erupted for four runs. Lou Boudreau scored on Valo’s throwing error, and Jim Hegan, Ken Keltner and Pat Seerey all amassed RBI singles.
Cleveland scored twice more in the third when Reynolds helped his own cause with a two-run single.
Reynolds, who battled control issues throughout, surrendered single runs to the A’s in the fourth and sixth innings, but that’s as close as Philadelphia would draw. The Indians sealed the deal in the ninth with three more runs, the first on Keltner’s second run-scoring single of the game, and the next two on Les Fleming’s two-run, two-out homer, his sixth long ball of the season.
A's manager Connie Mack, saddled with a very short pitching staff, was compelled to leave starter Dick Fowler on the mound to absorb all nine runs. Fowler has now dropped 10 straight decisions, the longest such streak in the major leagues thus far this year. Fowler’s last win came on June 26. His 16 losses are the most of any big league pitcher to date this season.
