DONNELLY 1-HITS REDS AFTER LOSING NO-NO IN 8TH
Deepest Phils Pitcher Has Taken No-Hitter this Year
CINCINNATI, Aug. 25 (AP) – Blix Donnelly of the Phillies took a no-hitter into the 8th inning and went on to one-hit Cincinnati in a 4-1 Philadelphia victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Crosley Field. The Reds earned a split by winning the nightcap 7-3. Donnelly became the first Phillies hurler to advance a no-hitter past the seventh inning and the first to throw a complete game one-hitter this season. Donnelly, who was claimed by the Phillies on July 8 after being waived by the St. Louis Cardinals the same day, has been a welcome addition to a much-maligned Phillies pitching staff, having posted a 2-2 record and a 2.78 ERA in six appearances (five starts) for Philadelphia.
Donnelly’s teammates gave him an early lead to work with. Skeeter Newsome led off the game with a base hit and advanced to third on Johnny Wyrostek’s single, the first of three hits the Phillies center fielder had on the day. Jim Tabor’s fly to left plated Newsome with the game’s first run.
The Phillies doubled their lead in the third, courtesy of the same three players. Newsome, Wyrostek and Tabor all rapped out base hits, with Newsome again crossing home plate.
In the sixth, Tabor led off with a single, and was forced at second on Del Ennis’ tapper back to the mound. Ennis stole second, advanced to third on Frank McCormick’s ground ball to first, and scored on Charlie Gilbert’s base hit, putting the Phillies on top 3-0.
Donnelly had been in firm charge of the game throughout, scattering three walks around five strikeouts over the first seven innings. But in the eighth, Bob Usher ambushed him by lining a 3-1 offering into the left field bleachers for his second home run of the season, and cutting the lead to 3-1, putting an end to the no-hit bid.
Philadelphia regained its three-run lead in the ninth. Gilbert led off with a double to right-center and Andy Seminick brought him home with a base hit, to make it 4-1.
Donnelly cruised through the ninth, retiring Cincinnati in order, and fanning Max West and Ray Lamano to close out the game with seven strikeouts. It was just the third Phillies win in their last 21 road games dating back to mid-July.
