GIANTS OUTLAST PHILS IN 12
Stanky's Base Hit Is Game-Winner

NEW YORK, May 12 (AP) - Eddie Stanky's two-out single drove home a sliding Bobby Thomson with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning and the New York Giants eked past the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-2, at the Polo Grounds.  Thomson led off the 12th with a single, advanced to second on Monte Irvin's hit-and-run ground out.  He remained there when Hank Thompson grounded back to pitcher Jim Konstanty, setting up Stanky's line single to left.  Thomson scored just ahead of the throw to the plate from Phillies left fielder Dick Sisler.

The bulk of the game was dominated by a pitchers' duel between Philadelphia's Robin Roberts and New York's Jim Hearn.  Despite excellent performances by both, neither was involved in the decision.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth.  Eddie Waitkus led off with a single to center and then was forced at second on Mike Goliat's grounder to short.  But Ken Silvestri, making his season's debut, lofted a high fly down the right field line which dropped into the second row of the upper deck for a home run, putting the Phillies on top 2-0.

The Giants equalized in the seventh, but needed the assistance of a shaky Philadelphia defense to finally dent Roberts.  With one out, Spider Jorgensen reached safely when second baseman Goliat booted his ground ball for an error.  Thomson followed with a double off the right field wall, chasing Jorgensen to third.  On the first pitch to Irvin, Silvestri was unable to handle a Roberts fastball.  The passed ball allowed Jorgensen to score and moved Thomson to third.  The Phillies brought the infield in and Irvin grounded to shortstop Granny Hamner who misplayed the ball, which rolled to the edge of the outfield grass.  Thomson scored the tying run on the play.  Roberts was able to avoid further damage.

Neither team advanced another runner past first base until the tenth when Philadelphia threatened and knocked Hearn out of the game in the process.  Silvestri led off the inning by drawing a walk and was replaced at first base by pinch runner Ed Sanicki.  Roberts then dropped a successful sacrifice bunt, moving Sanicki to second with one out.  With Richie Ashburn due up, Giants manager Leo Durocher called on left-hander Monte Kennedy to replace Hearn; the Giants starter doffed his cap on the way to the dugout to the appreciative home crowd.  Kennedy validated Durocher's move, retiring Ashburn and Granny Hamner on successive ground balls to the left side of the infield.

The Phillies had another threat in the top of the 12th.  With one out, now facing Dave Koslo, catcher Del Wilber singled.  Pinch hitter Eddie Pellagrini flied to center for the second out.  Ashburn then grounded to Al Dark at short, but the throw to first pulled Irvin off the bag.  The error gave Philadelphia another chance, but Koslo induced Hmaner to pop out.

That led to Stanky's game-winning hit in the bottom half of the frame.

The loss was just the second in the last 10 games for Philadelphia.  The Phillies will attempt to start a new winning streak when they face the Giants in a doubleheader at the Polo Grounds tomorrow.
