PIERCE LOSES NO-HITTER BUT NOT GAME
ChiSox Shutout Nats

WASHINGTON, June 14 (AP) - Billy Pierce took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and ultimately settled for a one-hit shutout as the Chicago White Sox tipped the Washington Senators 4-0 at Griffith Stadium in the first game of a doubleheader.  Pierce held Washington hitless until Mike McCormick grounded a single between first and second with one out in the eighth.

The White Sox took a lead they wouldn't surrender in the top of the second.  With one out, Jim Busby singled through the box and then stole second.  After Chico Carrasquel flied out Phil Masi grounded a base hit through the left side of the infield, scoring the speedy Busby easily.

A pitching duel between Pierce and Washington starter Sid Hudson.  After a harmless one-out walk to Mickey Grasso with one out in the second inning, Pierce retired 15 Senators in a row before McCormick's single.

Hudson, meanwhile, kept the White Sox from extending their 1-0 lead until the seventh.  In that frame, Busby led off with a single.  Two outs later, Pierce dropped a single in front of center fielder Irv Noren.  Bob Dillinger and Nellie Fox followed with consecutive walks to put Chicago ahead by two runs.

In the ninth, the White Sox added a pair of insurance runs off the Washington bullpen.  Reliever Hank Wyse hit Carrasquel and walked Masi to open the frame.  Pierce sacrificed the runners to second and third and consecutive singles by Dillinger and Fox accounted for the final margin of victory.

Pierce's one-hitter is the second of the year in the American League.  Boston's Mickey McDermott tossed a one-hit complete game shutout over the Senators at Fenway Park on May 27.
