BYRNE WALKS 10 IN CG WIN
Browns Sweep DH From Nats

ST. LOUIS, July 17 (AP) - Tommy Byrne walked 10 Washington Senators but still managed to toss a complete game 3-hitter as the St. Louis Browns won the nightcap of a doubleheader, 5-3, at Sportsman's Park.  The Browns survived a late-inning meltdown to win the opener as well, 10-9, in ten innings.  Byrne became the first pitcher this season to walk at least ten batters in a complete game victory.

Washington took the lead in the first inning thanks to an unearned run.  Eddie Yost led off the game by drawing Byrne's first base on balls and then Gil Coan reached when St. Louis first baseman Dale Long fired the lead throw on a would-be double play ball into left field.  The miscue was one of six Browns errors on the day.  Irv Noren sacrificed the runners to second and third and Mickey Vernon's roller to short scored Yost.

The Browns took the lead, for good as it turned out, in the second off Washington starter Fred Sanford.  Ray Coleman singled to open the frame and was doubled to third by Matt Batts.  Long fanned, but Fred Marsh bounced a single into right field, plating Coleman with Batts halting at third.  Tom Upton singled to center to score Batts; Marsh advanced to second on the play.  Byrne then helped his own cause with a single to right, chasing Upton home.  Sanford stopped the bleeding at that point, but St. Louis held a 3-1 lead after two innings.

The Senators crept to within a single run in the third.  Noren reached on an infield single and Vernon and Sam Mele drew consecutive walks to fill the bases with no outs.  But Byrne induced Sam Dente to roll into a 6-4-3 double play.  Noren scored to cut the St. Louis lead to 3-2, but the damage had been minimized; Gene Verble grounded out to end the inning.

The Browns extended their lead to three runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Upton walked to open the inning and Byrne bunted him to second.  Bobby Young's double to center plated Upton with the fourth St. Louis run of the game and, one out later, Jim Delsing's two-bagger sent Young home to make it 5-2 in favor of St. Louis.

The Senators edged closer in the seventh.  Pinch hitter Mike McCormick and Yost drew back-to-back walks to start the inning.  Coan's grounder eliminated the lead runner at third, but Noren singled to right-center, scoring McCormick and advancing Yost to third.  The tying runs were now aboard with only one out, but Byrne struck out Vernon and retired Mele on a fly ball to center to end the inning.

It was still 5-3 in the top of the ninth when Washington put together one last threat.  McCormick, who had remained in the game after his pinch hitting appearance in the seventh, drew his second walk in as many plate appearances.  Yost Flied out, but Coan smacked just the third of the game off Byrne by singling to right leaving runners on the corners with two outs.  With the tying runs on base and the go-ahead run at the plate, Byrne moved ahead of Noren 0-2 and induced a double play ball to end the game.

The loss was the seventh straight for the Senators.
