KOSLO STYMIES CARDS, GIANTS WIN 5TH STRAIGHT
N.Y. Within 6 of Lead; Mays Drive In Sole Run

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 4 (AP) - Dave Koslo fired his second shutout of the year and the New York Giants eked past the Cardinals, 1-0, at Sportsman's Park.  The game's lone run scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Willie Mays in the top of the third.  St. Louis wasted a fine effort by Cliff Chambers who tossed a complete game of his own.

The win was the fifth in a row for the Giants and the 11th in their last 13 games.  Coupled with Brooklyn's 5-4 loss at Cincinnati, New York is within six games of first place Brooklyn.

In a game without a single extra base hit, run-scoring situations were few and far between.  The Giants had plenty of baserunners, but limited serious threats.

In the third inning, Dave Williams led off with a single and advanced to third on Alvin Dark's hit-and-run safety to center.  Mays then rolled to short, forcing Dark, but beating the relay to first.  Monte Irvin walked, but Bobby Thomson and Whitey Lockman both grounded out to end the frame.

Koslo, meanwhile, was cruising.  He retired the first eight batters in order before surrendering a harmless two-out third inning single to his counterpart, Chambers, and then scattered singles in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.  The Cardinals never advanced a runner past second base after the fifth.

Chambers struggled with his control, but was aided by double play grounders in the fifth and sixth.  Despite failing to record a single 1-2-3 inning, the St. Louis left-hander allowed only one baserunner to advance past second after the third inning.
