YANKS NOT ABLE; LOSE TO CAIN
Bengals Lefty Twirls 3rd Shutout

NEW YORK, Sept. 14 (AP) - Bob Cain fired his third shutout of the season and the Detroit Tigers slipped past the New York Yankees, 1-0, at the Stadium.  With the loss the Yankees fell 2 1/2 games behind the idle Cleveland Indians in the American League pennant race.  New York's Vic Raschi absorbed the loss despite a strong effort--one run on five hits in eight innings.

Detroit scored the game's only run in the top of the first.  Johnny Lipon led off with a double past third baseman Gil McDougald into the left field corner.  One out later, Don Kryhoski looped a single to center, advancing Lipon to third.  Vic Werz followed with a fly ball to right field that was deep enough to score Lipon to put the Tigers on top, 1-0.

Detroit threatened to add to the lead in the third, when they loaded the bases with one out, but Raschi retired Pat Mullin on a pop fly to short and fanned Hoot Evers to extinguish the threat.

The best scoring chance for New York came in the fourth.  Joe DiMaggio drew a one-out walk and Yogi Berra flied to center.  McDougald followed with a single to center, leaving runners at first and second with two outs.  But Jerry Coleman fouled out to third to end the inning.

Raschi fought off a threat in the top of the sixth.  Wertz and Mullin singled to put runners at first and second to open the frame.  Evers flied to right for the first out and Jerry Priddy was retired on an infield out to advance the runners to second and third and Frank House walked to fill the bases with two outs.  But Cain grounded out to end the inning.

Meanwhile the Yankees were doing nothing against the Detroit starter.  Mickey Mantle led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, but Hank Bauer lined into a double play.  That was the last New York baserunner of the game; Cain retired the final 11 Yankees he faced to end the game.
