3-HR SEVENTH CLINCHES SHARE OF NL FLAG FOR DODGERS
Furillo, Campy, Hodges All Go Yard In 5-Run Inning

BOSTON, Sept. 26 (AP) - The Brooklyn Dodgers erased a four-run deficit by scoring five seventh inning runs, aided by three home runs, to record a 5-4 comeback victory over Boston at Braves Field.  The win clinched at least a tie for the National League pennant for the Dodgers.  The second place New York Giants staved off elimination for at least one more day by defeating the Philadelphia Phillies at Shibe Park.  Brooklyn can win the flag outright as early as tomorrow by defeating the Braves again.  New York will be idle.

Dodgers starter Don Newcombe struggled with his control all game long, walking seven in just 4 2/3 innings, and surrendered all four Boston runs.

The Braves took a 2-0 lead in the very first inning on Willard Marshall's two-out, two-run double and made it 4-0 with two more tallies in the fifth.  In that frame, Walker Cooper belted his seventh home run, a two-run shot, into the left field stands, scoring Sam Jethroe, who had led off the inning with a base on balls.  The Braves seemed poised to blow the game wide open at that point.  Marshall singled, and Sibby Sisti and Buddy Kerr followed with walks to fill the bases.  At that point, Dodgers manager Charlie Dressen pulled Newcombe as part of a double switch, and replaced him with Clyde King, who escaped further damage by fanning pitcher Max Surkont.

Surkont held the Dodgers at bay through the sixth, but the worm turned in the top of the seventh.  Roy Campanella led off the inning with his 30th home run of the season, deep into the lower seats in left-center field.  Jim Russell hit for King and grounded out, but Duke Snider followed with an opposite field single and Gil Hodges launched his league leading 37th home run of the year down the left field line to cut the Braves lead to 4-3.  Surkont retired Billy Cox on a fly to center for the second out, but Cal Abrams--who had been part of the double switch with Clyde back in the fifth--drew a free pass and promptly stole second.  Carl Furillo then crushed a 1-0 pitch off the facing of the upper deck in straight away left--the third Brooklyn home run of the inning--to put the Dodgers on top, 5-4.

The Braves threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth.  Phil Haugstad was in his second inning of relief and walked Bob Addis to open the inning.  Jethroe flied out, but Earl Torgeson rolled a single through the right side of the infield, chasing Addis to third.  With runners on the corners and only one out, Dressen made another move, replacing Haugstad with Bud Podbeilan.  The decision worked brilliantly; Podbeilan induced a double play grounder off the bat of the dangerous Sid Gordon, preserving the lead.  Neither team scored in the ninth and the Dodgers had their comeback victory.
