CUBS WIN 7TH STRAIGHT, COMPLETE SWEEP OF REDS
Burris Continues Stellar Start; Sutter Wins Debut on Monday's HR

CHICAGO, May 9 (AP) - Ray Burris held the Cincinnati Reds to one unearned run in nine strong innings of work and the Chicago Cubs tallied the game-winner on Rick Monday's home run in the bottom of the 10th to complete a series sweep with a 2-1 victory at Wrigley Field.  Burris was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth and Bruce Sutter made his major league debut, striking out two in a perfect 10th inning.  Sutter was credited with the win when the Cubs scored the tie-breaking run off Rawly Eastwick in the bottom half of the frame.  Burris and Cincinnati starter Pat Zachry both pitched effectively, but neither was involved in the decision.

The Cubs scored first, with a run off Zachry in the bottom of the opening inning.  Monday drew a lead-off walk, stole second and scored on Jose Cardenal's single to right.

The Reds evened the score in the fourth.  Joe Morgan matched Monday's first inning by drawing a lead-off free pass and stealing second base.  Dan Driessen then flied to right, advancing Morgan to third.  Cubs manager Jim Marshall, correctly anticipating a low-scoring affair, brought his infield in an attempt to cut the tying run off at the plate, and appeared to have guessed right when Tony Perez grounded to shortstop Mick Kelleher, who was at the edge of the infield grass.  But Kelleher misplayed the ball for an error, allowing Morgan--who had frozen at third--to score and Perez to reach first.  The game was now tied at a run apiece.

Chicago had a chance to break the deadlock in the sixth when Bill Madlock singled and Jerry Morales walked to open the inning, but Champ Summers grounded into a double play and Zachry retired Manny Trillo to end the threat.

Cincinnati's best chance to take the lead came in the eighth when consecutive singles off the bats of Pete Rose and Ken Griffey gave the Reds runners at first and second and only one out, but Morgan rolled into an inning ending double play.

The best chance that either team had to break the tie in regulation came in the bottom of the eighth when Summers led off with a double.  He was replaced by pinch runner Joe Wallis and Trillo followed with a perfect sacrifice bunt, giving the Cubs a runner at third with only one out.  But Randy Hundley struck out for the second out of the inning.  Reds manager Sparky Anderson then had Zachry intentionally walk pinch hitter Andre Thornton, forcing the Cubs to either let the weak hitting Burris bat for himself or pull him from the game.  Marshall decided to do the latter, sending George Mitterwald to the plate as a pinch hitter, but Zachry retired him on a fly to center, ending the inning.

After Sutter set down the Reds--including Mike Lum, pinch hitting for Zachry--in order in the top of the tenth, Eastwick took over on the mound.  On the very first pitch of the inning Monday launched the ball into the right field bleachers for his seventh home run of the year, giving the Cubs a 2-1 victory, completing the three-game sweep.

The contest represented the fourth time this year, in eight starts, that Burris has worked nine innings.
