ALLEN BLASTS 3 HRS AS PHILS WHIP METS
Philly 1B Drives in 7

PHILADELPHIA, May 26 (AP) - Dick Allen belted three home runs and drove in seven as the Philadelphia Phillies won their third straight over the New York Mets with an 8-5 victory at Veterans Stadium.  Allen becomes the fourth major leaguer this year to hit three home runs in a game.  Dave Kingman of the Mets accomplished the feat just three days ago in a win over the Montreal Expos.

The Phillies and starter Steve Carlton spotted New York a 3-0 lead.  The Mets scored twice in the first, when Felix Millan drew a one-out walk and scored on Joe Torre's triple.  Torre than came home on Kingman's base hit.  In the fourth, John Milner's two-out solo home run increased the New York lead to three runs.

But Allen keyed the Philadelphia comeback in the fourth.  With two outs, Ollie Brown singled off Mets starter Jon Matlack.  Gary Maddox advanced Brown to second with a base hit of his own and Allen then deposited a Matlack offering far into the seats in straight away left field for a game-tying three-run home run.

In the sixth, the Phillies took their first lead.  Greg Luzinski led off with a double off the left field wall and took third when Brown grounded a single to left.  Matlack struck out Maddox, bringing Allen to the plate.  Matlack tried to work carefully, but left a 1-0 breaking ball over the plate and Allen didn't miss the mistake.  The baseball landed only a few rows away from the fourth inning home run, and the three-run shot gave the Phillies a 6-3 advantage.

The Mets fought back in the seventh.  Milner drew a lead-off walk and Jerry Grote followed with a single to center, advancing Milner to second.  Roy Staiger's slow roller to third moved the runners to second and third with one out and Bud Harrelson drove home both of them with a double to right, cutting the deficit to 6-5.

Philadelphia added some insurance in the eighth, and once again Allen was in the middle of it.  Facing reliever Skip Lockwood with two outs, Allen hit his third home run of the game.  This one landed in the third row of seats above the bullpen, just inside the left field line.  Tim McCarver followed Allen's blast with one of his own, about 20 feet inside the right field foul pole, accounting for the final margin.

The Phillies have now won six straight games and nine of their last ten contests and stand in first place in the National League East, five games ahead of the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates, who are tied for second.
