PADS OUTLAST GIANTS 1-0 IN 14 INNINGS
Foster, Tomlin and Folkers Combine on Shutout

SAN DIEGO, May 28 (AP) - Ted Kubiak's one-out single in the bottom of the 14th inning scored Merv Rettenmund with the game's only run as the San Diego Padres slipped past the San Francisco Giants, 1-0, at San Diego Stadium.  Rettenmund had pinch hit three batters earlier and reached on an error, making the only run of the ball game unearned.

Alan Foster fired 10 innings of two-hit ball for the Padres and John Montefusco countered with 10 innings of three-hit shutout work but neither was involved in the decision.  Randy Tomlin and Rich Folkers each tossed a pair of scoreless innings for San Diego and Folkers was credited with the win.

The two teams combined for only 11 hits in the game but drew 13 total walks.

Scoring opportunities were few and far between, but one of the best came in the bottom of the very first inning.  Jerry Turner led off with a double and took third on Tito Fuentes soft grounder to Ken Reitz at third base.  But the Padres pulled the corners in and when Willie Davis grounded to first, Turner had to hold at third base.  Montefusco retired Willie McCovey on a grounder to short to end the threat.

The best chance for the Giants in the early part of the game came in the top of the fifth.  Chris Speier drew a lead-off walk from Foster and advanced to second on a base hit off the bat of Reitz.  But Foster induced Mike Ivie to roll into a double play, with Speier moving to third, and then got Montefusco on a grounder to short to end the inning with the game still scoreless.

The Padres put together a threat in the bottom of the sixth.  With one out, Foster walked and Turner singled him to second.  Fuentes hit a swinging bunt to the left of the mound and Montefusco threw to third to force Foster for the second out of the inning.  Davis then flied to center to close out the inning.

Bobby Murcer's one-out double in the top of the ninth made him the first San Francisco baserunner to reach second base since the fifth inning, but Foster struck out Gary Matthews and retired Willie Montanez on a grounder to first to avoid trouble.

After the sixth inning, the Padres didn't get a runner past first until the 12th, but when they did they nearly won the game.  Facing reliever Charlie Williams, pinch hitter Gene Locklear singled with two outs.  Dave Winfield walked, advancing Locklear to second and, on the first pitch from Williams, Doug Rader lined a single to center.  Locklear tried to score but he was gunned down at the plate by Larry Herndon, and the game moved to the 13th inning.

Gary Lavelle came on to pitch for the Giants in the 14th and retired Davis on a fly ball to start the inning but when Rettenmund, pinch hitting for Folkers, tapped one back to the mound, Lavelle mishandled his comebacker for an error.  Winfield followed with a double to right-center, chasing Rettenmund to third.  Rader was walked intentionally to load the bases, bringing Kubiak to the plate.  On a 1-0 pitch he singled through the box, scoring Rettenmund, finally ending the game.
