HUNTER, YANKS OUT-DUEL UMBARGER, RANGERS
Catfish Makes 1st Inning Run Stand Up
NEW YORK, June 13 (AP) – Catfish Hunter tossed a four-hit shutout,
out-dueling Jim Umbarger and the New York Yankees defeated the Texas Rangers,
1-0, at Yankee Stadium in a game that took a mere 1 hour and 47 minutes to
complete. Umbager allowed only three hits over eight innings in a complete
game of his own, but surrendered the contest’s only run in the bottom of the
first inning.
Both pitchers had long consecutive batters retired streaks in the game.
After yielding a base hit to Gene Clines leading off the ball game, Hunter set
down 21 consecutive Rangers before Jeff Burroughs singled to start the eighth
inning. Umbarger allowed a lead-off single to Fred Stanley in the third
inning and then proceeded to retire Mickey Rivers on a fly to center and induced
a double play ball from Roy White to end the inning. The Yankees failed to
have another batter reach base in the contest as Umbarger retired the final 17
hitters he faced.
The game’s only run came in the New York first. With one out, White
doubled into the right field corner. Thurman Munson grounded back to
Umbarger for the second out but Chris Chambliss bounced a single into right
field. White scored on the play and the Yankees took a 1-0 lead.
That was all Hunter would need.
The Rangers didn’t get a runner past second base and didn’t get anyone that
far until the eighth inning. After White scored, the Yankees didn’t
advance a baserunner beyond first.
