MESSERSMITH'S GEM GIVES BRAVES 9TH CONSECUTIVE 'W'
Henderson Factors in All 3 ATL Rallies

ST. LOUIS, June 14 (AP) – Andy Messersmith tossed a four-hit shutout and the Atlanta Braves won their season best ninth consecutive game with a 4-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.  The loss was the fourth straight for the Cardinals.  It was the third straight game in which Messersmith worked at least nine innings.

The Braves took control of the contest in the second inning.  Ken Henderson drew a one-out walk and, after Earl Williams flied out, Darrel Chaney drove Henderson home with a double to right-center.  Jerry Royster was walked intentionally by Cardinals starter Lynn McGlothen but Messersmith foiled the strategy with a run-scoring single up the middle and Atlanta led, 2-0.

The Braves added a run in the third with consecutive two-out singles by Tom Paciorek, Henderson and Williams.

Atlanta capped the scoring in the fifth and Henderson was involved again.  With one out, the Braves right fielder drew a walk and stole second base.  Williams grounded to short, but Chaney walked and Royster bounced a single to center, scoring Henderson with the game’s final run.

Messersmith, meanwhile, worked out of trouble in each of the first three innings, stranding two baserunners in each frame, and then retired 22 of the final 24 Cardinals he faced, never allowing a runner past first.
