PADS FIND BATS LATE, DEFEAT ROGERS, EXPOS
4-Run 8th Turns Tables

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 29, (AP) - Held scoreless on just one hit through eight innings the Padres erupted for four runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the Montreal Expos 4-1 at San Diego Stadium.  Padres pitcher Rick Sawyer, making his fourth start of the season, turned in his best effort to date holding the Expos to a single run on six hits while striking out five through eight innings to earn the victory.  Dave Tomlin and Butch Metzger combined on a perfect ninth to close out the win.

Expos starter Steve Rogers retired the first 14 San Diego hitters he faced before allowing a two-out single to Fred Kendall in the bottom of the fifth.  It was the deepest a Montreal hurler had pitched in a contest with an intact perfect game this season.  Rogers then retired the next five batters he faced before issuing his first free pass--to Willie Davis, one out into the seventh inning--before wriggling out of trouble.

The Expos took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Larry Parrish doubled with one out, moved to third on Del Unser's infield grounder and then scored on Tim Foli's two-bagger to the left-center field gap.  Gary Carter's infield single moved Foli to third but Sawyer avoided further damage when he retired Earl Williams on a first pitch pop fly to first baseman Mike Ivie.  Montreal's next best scoring opportunity game in the seventh when, with one out, Williams doubled but Sawyer retired Rogers on a pop up to third and ended the threat by inducing an inning-ending ground ball off the bat of Jerry White.

Rogers took a one-hit shutout into the eighth inning but yielded Kendall's second single of the contest to open the frame.  Merv Rettenmund ran for Kendall and, after Doug Rader struck out, advanced to second when Rogers walked pinch hitter Jerry Turner.  Ted Kubiak came on to hit for Sawyer and grounded a single through the middle, scoring Rettenmund to tie the game.  Turner and Kubiak advanced to second and third on Ellis Valentine's futile attempt to nab Rettenmund at the plate.  The Expos then executed a double switch, bringing Dale Murray in to pitch and inserting Pepe Frias at second base.  After falling behind Johnny Grubb, Murray walked the left-handed batter intentionally, filling the bases.  But Tito Fuentes swung at a first pitch fastball and lined a single to right, scoring Turner and Kubiak to make the score 3-0 and chasing Kubiak to third in the process.  Davis followed by dropping a single into center field, scoring Kubiak with the fourth run of the inning.  Murray, having retired none of the three batters he faced, was lifted in favor of Joe Kerrigan who got a double play ball off the bat of Dave Winfield to end the frame.

Dave Tomlin was brought on in the top of the ninth and he retired pinch hitter Jose Morales for the first out.  With successive right-handed batters due up, Butch Metzger was summoned from the bullpen and he set down Foli.  Lefty swinging Mike Jorgensen then hit for Carter but Metzger got him on a grounder to short to end the game.
