THE BIRD FLIES HIGH IN TIGERS VICTORY
Fidrych Tosses 9th Straight CG, 6th Straight 'W'

DETROIT, Sept. 3 (AP) - Mark Fidrych tossed his ninth consecutive complete game, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Tiger Stadium.  Fidrych has now won his last six starts.  The run of nine straight complete games matches the major league season high set by Gaylord Perry of the Texas Rangers from June 30 through August 16.  Fidrych's string began on July 29 with a ten-inning effort against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Ron LeFlore drew a lead-off walk from Milwaukee starter Jerry Augustine and stole his 54th base of the year to move into scoring position.  One out later, Rusty Staub drove LeFlore home with a single to center field.

The Brewers drew even in the third.  Tim Johnson reached on a one-out infield single and advanced to third when Von Joshua looped a single just inside the left field line.  Robin Yount's soft grounder to second scored Johnson to knot the score at a run apiece.

A one-out fourth inning home run off the bat of Willie Horton--his 10th long ball of the year--put Detroit on top 2-1 and Rusty Staub's 11th homer of the season, and second in as many days, in the sixth capped the scoring.

After Darrell Porter led off the top of the fifth inning with Milwaukee's fifth safety--an infield single--Fidrych tightened the screws.  He retired the next 13 Brewers in order until George Scott's base hit with one out in the ninth inning.  But Fidrych closed the game in style, fanning Bernie Carbo and Mike Hegan to end the contest.

For the game, Fidrych struck out a personal season-best nine batters, including Carbo and Sixto Lezcano twice apiece.  The Brewers managed just six singles--a remarkable four of them of the infield variety.  For the fourth time during the complete game streak and the ninth time in a start this year, Fidrych issued no walks.
