CLEVELAND'S RUN OF EXCELLENCE CONTINUES IN BOSOX VICTORY
Red Sox Right-Hander Takes No-Hitter Into 7th for 3rd Time in 4 Starts

MILWAUKEE, Sept. 15 - Reggie Cleveland won his fifth consecutive start--and his sixth straight decision--as the Boston Red Sox cruised past the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-1, at County Stadium.  Cleveland took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before surrendering a one-out single to Danny Thomas.  The Boston starter seemed to tire a bit in the ninth inning, allowing consecutive one-out hits to Von Joshua and Sixto Lezcano before being lifted by manager Darrell Johnson.  Jim Willoughy retired the final two batters to close out the game.

This was the third time in the last four starts that Cleveland has taken a no-hitter into at least the seventh inning.  The run began on August 31 at Fenway Park against the Texas Rangers.  Cleveland held the Rangers hitless until, with one out in the eighth inning, Roy Howell singled.  Cleveland finished with a two-hit complete game shutout in Boston's 1-0 victory.  On September 10, in a home contest with the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland brought a no-hitter into the seventh before yielding a lead-off single to Ben Oglivie.  The Tigers erupted for five runs in the frame, chasing Cleveland from the mound, but he still picked up the win in a 13-5 blowout.

The Red Sox seized control of this game early on.  Rick Burleon led off the contest by drawing a walk and, one out later, advanced to second on Rick Miller's base hit.  Carl Yastrzemski then drove home Burelson with a single of his own.

Boston added a pair of runs in the third when Burleson led off with a double, advanced to third on Steve Dillard's sacrifice and scored on Miller's grounder to short.  Yastrzemski then followed with his 25th home run of the year--a two-out solo shot--to give the Red Sox a 3-0 advantage.

Burleson and Dillard teamed up for another run in the fifth.  Burleson led off with a base hit and Dillard followed by grounding a single through the middle.  Burelson took third on the play and center fielder Joshua overran the ball for a tack-on error, allowing Burleson to score all the way from first base.

In the sixth, Jim Rice led off with a walk, stole second on a botched hit and run play, moved to third on Dwight Evans' sacrifice and, after Butch Hobson rolled back to the mound for the second out, scored on Burleson's third hit of the game.

The Red Sox got their final run in the ninth.  Miller led off with a base hit, took second on a one-out wild pitch uncorked by Brewers reliever Eduardo Rodriguez, and then scored on Cecil Cooper's two-out single.

The only Milwaukee run came in the bottom of the ninth when, after the one-out singles from Joshua and Lezcano, a fielder's choice off the bat of George Scott plated Joshua.

Burleson finished the game 3-for-3, including a double, two walks and three runs scored.  It's the fourth consecutive multi-hit game for the Boston shortstop.
