TANANA FIRES 2-HITTER AS HALOS SHUT OUT RANGERS
Lefty Backs Ryan's 1-Hitter with Gem of Own

ANAHEIM, Cal., Sept. 21 (AP) - The day after Nolan Ryan came within two outs of a no-hitter, Frank Tanana stifled the Texas Rangers on just two hits as the California Angels eked out a 1-0 victory at Anaheim Stadium.  While a no-hit bid disappeared early on--Jeff Burroughs singled to lead off the top of the second for the Rangers--Tanana was masterful, snapping a personal three-game losing streak.  Tanana held Texas hitless after the second inning.

The Rangers very nearly took the lead in that second frame.  After Burroughs led off with a single, Gene Clines struck out and Tom Grieve lined out to third but Juan Beniquez roped a double off the base of the left-center field wall.  Burroughs tried to score but a relay from center fielder Dave Collins to shortstop Tim Nordbrook to catcher Terry Humphrey cut down Burroughs at the plate to end the inning.  Texas would never come close to scoring again.

Perhaps inspired by the end of the top of the second, the Angels broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the inning.  With one out, Bruce Bochte sliced a line drive into the left field corner.  With the outfield shifted well around toward right, Bochte was able to make it all the way to third with a triple and he then scored on Mario Guerrero's slow roller to first base.

Rangers starter Nelson Briles was quite stingy himself, scattering a total of five hits in his six innings of work, before being removed for reliever Steve Foucault.  The Angels nearly added to their lead in the fifth, due in no small part to a Rangers miscue.  Dave Chalk reached with two outs on an infield single off Briles, bringing Nordbrook to the plate.  Nordbrook's potential double play grounder was booted by first baseman Doug Ault, leaving California with runners on first and second.  Briles then missed on a 3-2 pitch to Collins, filling the bases.  But Jerry Remy lifted a shallow fly to right which was handled easily by Burroughs to extinguish the threat.

Tanana was on cruise control after the second inning.  Ault drew a one-out walk in the fourth but the Rangers never advanced him past first base and Burroughs reached on a one-out error charged to second baseman Remy in the seventh, but Tanana retired Clines and Grieve on routine fly balls to right.  For the game, the Angels starter struck out nine batters en route to his third shutout.  It is the 20th time this season that Tanana has fanned at least nine batters in a game, tops in all of baseball.  Ryan, Tanana's teammate, is second on the list with 19 such performances.

The Rangers have now been involved in eight 1-0 games this season, most in the American League.
