NL POUNDS AL IN TRULY OFFENSIVE ALL-STAR GAME
Foster Hits 2 HRs in Rout

PHILADELPHIA, July 13 (AP) - The National League scored seven times in the first two innings and went on to an easy 16-8 victory in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Veterans Stadium.  George Foster homered in each of the first two innings and drove in four runs and was named the game's Most Valuable Player.  Foster's Cincinnati teammate, Joe Morgan, had three hits, including a home run of his own, scored three times and drove in three and Bob Watson of the Houston Astros had three hits of his own.  The two teams combined for 24 runs on 33 hits in a contest utterly unrepresentative of the play in both leagues during the first half of the regular season where low-scoring, well-pitched games have been the norm.

American League starting pitcher Jim Palmer, who has won 15 regular season contests, didn't make it out of the second inning, surrendering Foster's two-run homer in the opening frame, which followed Morgan's single and stolen base.  In the second inning, NL starter Steve Carlton singled with two outs to begin a huge uprising that didn't end until after Palmer left the game.  Pete Rose followed Carlton's safety with a walk and then Morgan deposited a fastball into the bullpen in right field for a three-run home run and a 5-0 NL lead.  Rick Monday then grounded a single into right field and Foster unloaded for the second time, driving a pitch into the left field seats for a 7-0 advantage.  Palmer was replaced by Mark Fidrych who yielded a single to Bob Watson before finally ending the inning by inducing a ground ball to second off the bat of Manny Sanguillen.

Though the AL ultimately scored eight times, the game was never remotely close from this point.  The American League finally got on the board in the third when George Brett reached on a two-out infield single, moved to second when Bobby Grich drew a free pass and scored on Hal McRae's base hit to center field.

The National League made it 9-1 in the fourth off Ken Holtzman.  Morgan led off with a single and moved to second on Lou Brock's base hit.  Pinch hitter Greg Luzinski struck out but Watson reached on an infield single to load the bases.  Pepe Mangual then lined a single to left, scoring Morgan and Brock.

Three more NL runners crossed the plate in the fifth against Frank Tanana, though all three runs were unearned.  Bill Madlock led off with a single and moved to second when third baseman Don Money couldn't handle Ken Griffey's roller.  Pinch hitter Dave Cash flied to center for the first out but Brock lined a base hit to center, scoring Madlock and advancing Griffey to third.  Pinch hitter Dick Allen flied to left but Watson slashed a double into the left field corner, scoring two more runs and giving the NL a 12-1 lead.

The rest of the game was little more than a formality.  Ralph Garr singled home Mike Hargrove, who had doubled, in the top of the sixth and the AL picked up a pair of additional runs in the seventh on a single by Lyman Bostock and a ground out off the bat of Rod Carew but the NL got two back in the bottom of the seventh on Mike Schmidt's triple and Mangual's single.

Buddy Bell singled home a run in the top of the eighth for the AL and the NL received RBI singles in the bottom half of the inning from Cash and Brock.

The AL refused to go quietly into that good night and tallied three more consolation runs in the ninth. Carew led off with a double off Tommy John and Fred Lynn rolled a single through the box, scoring Carew.  Carlton Fisk fanned but Thurman Munson crushed a long home run to left to make the score 16-8.  NL manager Sparky Anderson used his last available player when he replaced John with J.R. Richard and Richard mercifully ended the game easily, retiring Willie Randolph and Bell on infield grounders.

Because of the lopsided nature of the game, both managers--Anderson and AL skipper Darrell Johnson--were able to use all of their players without worrying about the outcome of the game.  Every position player for both sides got at least one plate appearance.
