1982 American League Championship Series

 Baltimore vs. California

Game 1, at Anaheim Stadium:  Flanagan vs. Kison

ANGELS RALLY LATE, STEAL OPENER
Beniquez Doubles in Game-Winner in 12th

ANAHEIM, Cal., Oct. 4 (AP) -- The California Angels rallied from a 4-2 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth and then scored a two-out run in the 12th to steal Game 1 of the American League Championship series before 67,663 at Anaheim Stadium.

With one out and the bases empty in the home half of the ninth inning, Baltimore Orioles reliever Sammy Stewart surrendered back-to-back singles to Rod Carew and Doug DeCinces and then walked Don Baylor to fill the bases. Stewart was replaced by Tippy Martinez who promptly walked Reggie Jackson to force in a run, making it 4-3. Fred Lynn lifted a sacrifice fly to left, plating DeCinces and tying the game.

Luis Sanchez and Doug Corbett shut the Orioles down completely from that point on and finally, in the bottom of the 12th, DeCinces drew a two-out walk off right-hander Storm Davis. Juan Beniquez, who entered the game as a pinch runner for Baylor in the ninth, then laced a double into the left-center field gap. DeCinces scored standing, all the way from first, as the huge "Big A" crowd exploded in delirium.

The Orioles drew first blood with three unearned runs in the second off Angels starter Bruce Kison. With one out and Eddie Murray on second, DeCinces booted Gary Roenicke's ground ball, setting the Orioles up with runners on the corners. After Rich Dauer popped to DeCinces, Lenn Sakata and Rick Dempsey followed with RBI singles and Al Bumbry dropped a double down the left field line to score the third run.

The Angels answered in the fourth off Orioles starter Mike Flanagan on Bobby Grich's two-run double.

Baltimore added what appeared to be an insurance run in the eighth on consecutive doubles by Murray and Cal Ripken off Andy Hassler and Sanchez respectively but it wasn't enough.

The Angels breathed a sigh of relief at the conclusion of the contest, having stranded 18 men in a game they came within a whisker of losing.

Game 2, at Anaheim Stadium:  Martinez vs. Zahn

"EL PRESIDENTE" PITCHES O'S PAST HALOS
Complete Game Evens ALCS

ANAHEIM, Cal., Oct. 6 (AP) -- Dennis Martinez went the distance and his teammates bashed out 14 hits off a trio of California pitchers as the Baltimore Orioles evened the American League Championship Series with an 8-5 win in Game 2.

Martinez allowed five runs (three earned) en route to the complete game but largely seemed in command throughout.  With the exception of Bobby Grich, who went 4-4 with a pair of runs batted in, Martinez mostly held the Angels in check.

The Orioles scored three runs off California starter Geoff Zahn in the top of the first and led the whole way. Baltimore touched Zahn for seven runs in all, but for the second straight game the Angels played shoddy defense, committing two errors which led to five unearned runs.  California committed a pair of errors and allowed three unearned runs in Game 1.

With one out and the bases empty in the top of the first, Zahn walked Rich Dauer. Cal Ripken followed with a tailor made double play grounder to Angels shortstop Tim Foli who booted it, putting runners at first and second. A passed ball charged to catcher Bob Boone moved the runners to second and third and Eddie Murray then reached on an infield single, scoring Dauer with the game's first run and advancing Ripken to second.  Zahn then walked Gary Roenicke to fill the the bases and Benny Ayala drew a free pass to force in the inning's second run.  Dan Ford lined out to deep center, plating the inning's final run.  A Zahn wild pitch did no further damage as Lenn Sakata grounded out to end the inning.  The three runs came on the strength of only one ball hit out of the infield--Ford's line drive that was caught by Fred Lynn.

No more scoring came until Dauer led off the top of the fifth inning with the first home run of the series.

Martinez had scattered a mere pair of singles through the first four innings but the Angels got back in the game in the bottom of the fifth.  Baylor led off by drawing a walk and Grich followed by grounding a single through the box.  Foli, the American League's regular season leader in sacrifice bunts, sacrificed the runners to second and third and Boone fanned.  But just when it seemed as though Martinez would escape the jam, Brian Downing cracked a three-run home run that just barely stayed inside the left field foul pole.

The Orioles, however, regained their four-run lead in the top of the sixth with another California error playing a major role.  Sakata led off with a single and was still at first base one out later when Al Bumbry tapped a ball back to the mound.  Zahn fielded it cleanly but misfired on his attempt to force Sakata at second, putting runners at first and second.  Dauer flied to right for the second out of the inning, but Ripken launched a ball that carried into the football extension seats in deep left-center. All three runs in the inning were unearned.

The Angels cut the lead to 7-5 in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of a Baltimore miscue.  Lynn doubled to lead off the inning, but Reggie Jackson and Doug DeCinces were retired with Lynn still on second.  Martinez induced Baylor to hit a routine ground ball to third but Dauer kicked it.  Instead of ending the inning the Angels had runners on the corners with two outs.  Grich followed with a double into the gap in left-center plating Lynn and Baylor.  Foli flied out to end the inning.

That capped the scoring for California.  The Orioles added an insurance run in the ninth when Bumbry doubled home Ford, who had singled earlier in the inning, from first base with two outs.

The Angels did get the tying run to the plate in the ninth.  Grich singled--his fourth hit of the game--with one out and Ron Jackson, pinch hitting for Foli, followed with a base hit of his own.  The Orioles decided to stick with Martinez and their confidence was rewarded when the right-hander retired pinch hitter Juan Beniquez and Downing on ground balls to end the game.

Following a day off, the series moves to the East Coast.  Lefties Tommy John and Scott McGregor are expected to face off at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium in Game 3.

Game 3, at Memorial Stadium:  John vs. McGregor

ANGELS ROMP, ON CUSP OF WORLD SERIES
Reggie, Rod Drive in 4 Apiece

BALTIMORE, Oct. 8 (AP) -- The California Angels broke a tie in the sixth inning and then scored a combined ten runs in the seventh and eighth, moving to within a game of the World Series with a 13-2 pasting of the Baltimore Orioles at Memorial Stadium.

Reggie Jackson and Rod Carew both homered and drove in four runs to pace the California onslaught.  Tommy John, applying his typical bend-but-don't-break approach, was the beneficiary and worked seven innings for the win.  Dave Goltz mopped up with a pair of hitless, shutout frames.

The game was still scoreless in the top of the fourth when the Angels moved on top on Jackson's RBI single.  The Orioles knotted the game in the bottom of fifth on Al Bumbry's RBI fielder's choice.

What had been a pitcher's duel turned into something else entirely beginning with the sixth inning.  With Jackson on first and one out, Orioles third baseman Rich Dauer kicked a potential double play grounder off the bat of Don Baylor.  One out later, Bobby Grich lined a Scott McGregor breaking ball into the left field corner for a double, scoring both runners and putting the Angels up 3-1.  In what has become a theme in the ALCS, both runs were unearned.

John staunched an Orioles threat (two on, one out) in the bottom of the frame and the Angels then took firm control in the top of the seventh.  Tim Foli and Brian Downing opened with consecutive singles and Carew launched a home run into the right field bleachers making it 6-1 and ending McGregor's day.  Don Stanhouse retired the next three Angels in order but the damage had been done.

The Orioles got a run back in their half of the seventh with an opposite field double but California left the outcome beyond doubt with a seven-run uprising in the eighth.  Stanhouse hit Fred Lynn with a pinch to lead off the inning and walked Grich.  Bob Boone sacrificed the runners to second and third and then, with the infield in, Foli grounded to short. With the contact play on, Cal Ripken cut down Lynn at home and it seemed that the Orioles would still have a fighting chance, trailing by four.  But Downing doubled home two and Carew singled in a third run, making it 9-2.  DeCinces walked and Jackson crushed a monstrous homer, deep into the right field seats.  Ross Grimsley replaced Stanhouse but yielded another run, on a Grich single, before finally ending the inning.  That capped the scoring.

The two teams meet again tomorrow at Memorial Stadium for Game 4 as the Angels look to wrap up the series and the Orioles attempt to push it to a fifth game.  The Angels will pit Ken Forsch (16-8 regular season) against the Orioles' Jim Palmer (18-9).

O'S STUN HALOS IN 10TH; FORCE FIFTH GAME
Two-Out Bases Empty Rally Turns Defeat Into Victory

BALTIMORE, Oct. 9 (AP) -- In one of the more memorable games in Championship Series history, the Baltimore Orioles rallied for two runs with the bases empty and two outs in the bottom of the tenth for an ALCS evening 3-2 victory over the stunned California Angels.

Angels reliever Luis Sanchez, in his third inning of relief, had been brilliant, bailing his team out of an eighth inning jam while allowing only one baserunner--on an intentional walk--before retired Eddie Murray on a pop fly to short and pinch hitter Terry Crowley on a fly to left in the ninth, putting his team one out away from a trip to the World Series.

But with the bases empty and two outs, Gary Roenicke belted a Sanchez fastball over the 387-foot marker in left-center field, sending the Memorial Stadium crowd of 53,278 into a state of pandemonium.  Before the partisans had even quieted down, Rich Dauer looped a single to left and Glenn Gulliver, who had been brought into the game earlier as a defensive replacement, grounded a ball past first baseman Rod Carew into the right field corner, scoring a sliding Dauer ahead of Bobby Grich's relay throw as the crowd erupted for the second time in three minutes.

The late heroics erased the one-run lead that the Angels had established in the top half of the tenth.  Tippy Martinez was inserted to start the inning and walked Reggie Jackson to begin the frame.  Juan Beniquez ran for Jackson and moved to second when Martinez walked Fred Lynn.  Doug DeCinces--an accomplished bunter--was asked to sacrifice the runners along, but his attempt resulted in Beniquez being forced at third when the Orioles put the wheel play on and Martinez fired to shortstop Cal Ripken covering.  But Martinez's wildness betrayed him.  He walked Bobby Grich--the third free pass of the inning--to fill the bases.  Bob Boone then lifted a fly ball to medium deep right field.  Roenicke made the catch 15 feet shy of the warning track, but had no play on Lynn at the plate.  Martinez rallied to fan Tim Foli to end the inning, but the Angels had taken a 2-1 lead.

All the tenth inning dramatics overshadowed a brilliant pitcher's duel between Ken Forsch of the Angels and Jim Palmer of the Orioles.  While Forsch managed to dance between the raindrops, holding Baltimore to just one run in seven innings despite allowing 10 hits and walking two, Palmer was dominant, limiting California to a single run on just six hits.

The Angels scored their only run off Palmer with two outs in the top of the first when Don Baylor hit a solo home run. The Orioles evened the score in the bottom of the fourth. John Lowenstein led the inning off with a single.  Forsch retired Ripken and Murray without incident, but then walked Ken Singleton and Roenicke to fill the bases with two outs.  Rich Dauer then grounded a Forsch delivery up the middle.  The ball was smothered by a diving Grich, but he had no play, allowing Lowenstein to score, tying the game.

From that point on, the Angels had few good scoring opportunities but the Orioles had plenty of them.  Baltimore put the first two runners on base in the fifth but failed to score and stranded runners on first and third in the sixth.

But the Orioles' best chance to take the lead came in the eighth.  With Forsch still on the hill, Murray slapped an opposite field single to start the frame and Singleton followed with a line drive to right-center, advancing Murray to third.  Floyd Rayford was called on to run for Singleton. It was at that point that Sanchez replaced Forsch and worked out of the jam.  He induced Roenicke to pop to Grich and forced Dauer to tap back to the mound. With the contact play on because of the potential double play situation, Murray was thrown out at the plate, leaving runners at first and second.  The Orioles sent Jim Dwyer to the plate to hit for Lenn Sakata.  With catcher Rick Dempsey on deck, the Angels chose to have Sanchez walk Dwyer intentionally.  The Orioles stuck with Dempsey, who was 2-3 in the game at that point, and Sanchez got him to roll out to Grich at second to end the threat.

The Angels then had their first scoring opportunity of the entire game in the top of the ninth.  Foli led off the inning with a single to right off Palmer. Brian Downing flied out, but Carew grounded out to short with Foli advancing to second. Other than Baylor's home run, Foli was the first runner the Angels had advanced past first base all game and it appeared to be the difference in the game when Baylor lined a single to right.  But Roenicke charged in, speared the ball on one hop and cut down Foli at the plate with a perfect throw to Dempsey.

The Orioles went down in order in the bottom of the ninth, and that set up the dramatics in the tenth.  In all Baltimore stranded 12 runners; California left just four.

There will be no rest for the weary as the two teams will return tomorrow for a deciding Game 5.  Both clubs are expected to return to their Game 1 starters: Bruce Kison for the Angels and Mike Flanagan for the Orioles.

Game 5, at Memorial Stadium:  Kison vs. Flanagan

O'S WHIP ANGELS IN ALCS RUBBER MATCH
Advance to World Series Behind Murray, Flanagan

BALTIMORE, Oct. 10 (AP) -- Eddie Murray homered twice, Ken Singleton went 4-4 and Mike Flanagan fired a complete game as the Baltimore Orioles decisively defeated a dejected California Angels team, 7-2, in the decisive fifth game of the American League Championship Series at Memorial Stadium. The Orioles advance to the World Series against the winner of Game 5 of the National League Championship Series, which will be played tomorrow.

ALCS Game 5 was something of an anti-climax after the dramatics of Game 4 when the Orioles rallied for two runs with two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning to win. The Angels appeared quite flat in Game 5.

The Orioles raced out to an early lead and never looked back. With the game scoreless in the bottom of the second, Murray led off with a towering home run off Angels starter Bruce Kison.  The ball passed just inside the right field foul pole and landed halfway up the bleachers.  Singleton followed with a double into the left field corner and then Gary Roenicke lined the first pitch he saw from Kison just inside the left field pole, putting Baltimore on top 3-0.  It was a lead the Orioles would never surrender.

In fact, the Birds added to the lead in the fifth, again courtesy of Murray.  John Lowenstein singled with one out and then Murray crushed a Kison offering far over the left-center field wall to make it 5-0.

The Angels had managed only one baserunner past first through the fifth inning against Flanagan but tried in vain to make a game of it in the sixth. Bob Boone and Brian Downing opened the frame by drawing walks and then advanced to second and third when Flanagan uncorked a wild pitch.  The Angels managed to score a pair of runs--one on a Rod Carew ground out and the other on a Doug DeCinces sacrifice fly--but Flanagan prevented any other baserunners in the inning.

It was still 5-2 entering the bottom of the seventh when the Orioles all but put the game away.  Now facing left-handed reliever Andy Hassler, pinch hitter Dan Ford walked.  One out later, Murray crushed a drive off the base of the center field wall, advancing Ford to third.  Singleton followed with his fourth hit of the game, a double to right-center, capping the scoring.

California did have a modest threat in the eighth when pinch hitter Ron Jackson and Downing led off with consecutive singles, but Carew bounced into a threat-killing double play and DeCinces rolled back to the mound to end the inning.

Flanagan set the Angels down in order in the top of the ninth, with Fred Lynn ending the game on a routine grounder to second baseman Lenn Sakata.

The World Series begins on October 13 at the home of the National League participant.
