4-RUN 3RD PROPELS NL TO ASG VICTORY

Van Slyke, Teammates Pound Clemens

TORONTO, July 9 (AP) – The National League, capitalizing on a four-run top of the third, raced out to a 6-0 advantage and held off the American League to post a 6-4 victory in Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game at Skydome.  The NL beat up on Boston’s Roger Clemens in that third inning, with Andy Van Slyke’s two-run homer being the big blow.

After Nolan Ryan (AL) loaded the bases, but escaped without allowing a run in the top of the first, Tom Glavine (NL) pitched around a one-out walk to Frank Thomas in the bottom half to keep the game scoreless.  Craig Biggio belted a one-out home run off Ryan in the top of the second to give the NL the lead, and Glavine stranded a pair of runners in the bottom half, as the National League took a 1-0 advantage into the third.

Clemens immediately got into trouble when he came on for the AL.  Ryne Sandberg led off with a base hit and Bobby Bonilla singled Sandberg to second.  Fred McGriff followed with a base hit to right-center, scoring Sandberg and leaving runners on first and third.  Clemens induced Barry Bonds to roll into a 6-4-3 double play, scoring Bonilla to make it 3-0.  Paul O’Neill then drew a walk and, after filling the count, Van Slyke drilled a Clemens fastball into the right field seats for a 5-0 NL lead.

After a scoreless fourth, Jack Morris, in his second inning of work, walked Bonds, O’Neill and Van Slyke to open the top of the fifth.  Jamie Navarro replaced Morris and yielded a sacrifice fly to Kevin Mitchell, putting the NL on top 6-0, before retiring Mike Scioscia and Barry Larkin to end the inning.

The AL attempted to get back in the game in the bottom of the fifth.  With Dwight Gooden on the hill for the NL, Mickey Tettleton reached on third baseman Bonilla’s error, and Jody Reed followed with s double down the third base line.  With runners on second and third, Julio Franco roped a two-bagger into the right field corner, scoring both Tettleton and Reed.  Cal Ripken grounded to second, with Franco advancing to third.  Rafael Palmeiro followed with a sacrifice fly to right, pulling the AL to within 6-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, with Dennis Martinez pitching, Rickey Henderson reached on Jeff Treadway’s miscue and stole second base.  He then scored on Ken Griffey, Jr.’s base hit to center, cutting the NL lead to 6-4, and bringing the tying run to the plate.  But Martinez retired Tettleton, Reed and Edgar Martinez in order to end the inning.

That was pretty much it.  The AL only managed one more baserunner—a one-out walk to Henderson by Ramon Martinez in the eighth—and never advanced anyone beyond first base for the duration of the game.

American League pitchers issued an astonishing 11 walks in the game—eight of them before a single out was recorded in the fifth inning—but the NL stranded nine men during the game and grounded into three double plays.  Only one of the four runs scored by the AL was earned, a function of the pair of errors the NL committed.
